AMERICAN NATURE<\/strong>\u201d, la <strong>pi\u00f9 importante retrospettiva del fotografo americano. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019esposizione, curata da <strong>Brian Wallis<\/strong> (CPW &#8211; Center for Photography at Woodstock), presenta per la prima volta riunite <strong>le serie fotografiche pi\u00f9 significative<\/strong> degli ultimi vent\u2019anni di Mitch Epstein in cui esplora i conflitti tra la societ\u00e0 americana e la natura selvaggia nel contesto del cambiamento climatico globale: <em>American Power, Property Rights <\/em>e<em> Old Growth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>American Power<\/em><\/strong> l\u2019artista si concentra su come le nazioni e gli interessi privati sfruttano la natura, documentando l\u2019impatto della produzione e del consumo di energia sul paesaggio e sulla popolazione degli Stati Uniti. Dal 2003 al 2008 Epstein ha viaggiato per il Paese per fotografare i siti di produzione di combustibili fossili e di energia nucleare, nonch\u00e9 le comunit\u00e0 che vivono accanto ad essi.<\/p>\n<p>Nella serie fotografica <strong><em>Property Rights, <\/em><\/strong>Mitch Epstein si domanda a chi appartenga la terra e chi ha il diritto di sfruttarne o saccheggiarne le risorse. Queste fotografie indagano le complesse dinamiche della propriet\u00e0 terriera in un paese basato sull\u2019espansione coloniale e sullo sviluppo industriale. Epstein ha iniziato la serie <em>Property Rights<\/em> nella riserva Sioux di Standing Rock nel 2017. Le sue conversazioni e le sessioni di ritratti con gli anziani nativi lo hanno ispirato a cercare altri conflitti fondiari, in cui la gente comune ha creato movimenti straordinari per difendere la terra dalle acquisizioni da parte del governo e delle imprese.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ultima opera di Epstein, <strong><em>Old Growth<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 di cui si presenta in anteprima una parte commissionata da Intesa Sanpaolo &#8211; celebra le antiche foreste sopravvissute in regioni remote degli Stati Uniti. La quasi totalit\u00e0 delle antiche foreste americane, circa il 95%, \u00e8 stato infatti distrutto nel secolo scorso. Epstein ha deciso di fotografare singoli alberi e biosistemi interdipendenti che sono sopravvissuti per secoli, molti per millenni.<\/p>\n<p>Le sue fotografie, di grande formato, immergono i visitatori in una natura selvaggia primordiale non alterata dagli esseri umani, celebrando la maestosit\u00e0 e la resilienza di questi antichi regni viventi ed evidenziando ci\u00f2 che l\u2019uomo rischia di perdere a causa della crisi climatica.<\/p>\n<p>Oltre a queste tre serie fotografiche, alla produzione fotografica di Epstein, nella sala immersiva delle Gallerie d\u2019Italia \u2013 Torino, sar\u00e0 presentato <strong>in anteprima<\/strong> il progetto originale di Mitch Epstein<strong> <em>Forest Waves<\/em>, <\/strong>un&#8217;installazione video e sonora delle quattro stagioni nelle foreste del Berkshire. Il video dei boschi che circonder\u00e0 gli spettatori \u00e8 accompagnato da una colonna sonora ipnotica dei musicisti Mike Tamburo e Samer Ghadry, registrata in quelle stesse foreste. L&#8217;Arena delle Gallerie d&#8217;Italia &#8211; Torino ospiter\u00e0 inoltre il <strong>cortometraggio <\/strong>di Epstein<strong> <em>Darius Kinsey: Clear Cut<\/em><\/strong>, una raccolta visivamente avvincente di fotogrammi del fotografo di inizio XX secolo Darius Kinsey (1859-1945), che mostra eroici taglialegna in posa accanto a enormi alberi abbattuti nel nord-ovest americano. La proiezione \u00e8 impostata sulla musica scritta da David Lang ed eseguita dalla violoncellista e cantante Maya Beiser.
